Ecrivain français, Jules VERNE a constitué la plus grande partie de son œuvre de romans d’aventures utilisant les progrès scientifiques propres au XIXème siècle. Le voyage commence à Zanzibar sur la côte de l'Océan Indien et, survolant le lac Victoria, le lac Tchad, Agadez, Tombouctou, Djenné et Ségou, aboutit à Saint-Louis, colonie française aujourd'hui possession du Sénégal, sur la côte de l'Océan Atlantique. Le livre décrit les multiples et dangereuses aventures que vont vivre les trois hommes durant cette périlleuse traversée.
